Shubman Gill will have to wait before he becomes the vice-captain of the India Cricket Team. The BCCI went on to announce the India squad for the upcoming 3-match Test series against New Zealand. It was when Jasprit Bumrah was re-announced as the deputy to Rohit Sharma.
Young Shubman Gill has been appointed as the deputy to Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in both ODIs and T20Is respectively. But to become the vice-captain of the team in red-ball cricket, the young batter will have to patiently wait for his chance.

It was assumed that the 25-year-old would become the new vice-captain of the Indian Cricket Team after the appointment of the new head coach Gautam Gambhir. In fact, he did become the deputy in both formats in white ball cricket. With Rohit Sharma retiring from T20Is, Gambhir and the Selection Committee decided to make SKY the new captain instead of Hardik Pandya.
And, Gill was touted as the new vice-captain of the team in multi-format. But things took a sharp turn when India decided not to name any vice-captain for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. However, come the Tests against the Black Caps, Jasprit Bumrah has been reinstated as the captain of the team in red ball format.
It is also crucial that the team has a vice captain who can effectively lead the charge in the absence of Rohit Sharma. A similar case would be expected to take place during the Border Gavaskar Trophy, where Rohit is slated to miss at least a game.
